If you've followed me on Facebook, you probably know I have a huge issue with motion sickness. If I go to any theme park - I am taking Dramamine. So when my sister came to me with the idea of going to Alaska to celebrate her 50th birthday.... and it was on a ship... well okay. I guess.
BEST IDEA EVER! We searched all the different cruise lines that I book and found a nice priced one on a smaller ship with Holland America Line. I was prepared. I went to my primary care physician and was given a prescription for the motion sickness patches (not cheap by the way) but they worked great. I did experience blurry vision which only affected me when I was trying to read menus. I never felt anything on the cruise ship until the very last day when we were rolling back to Canada but even that motion wasn't a big deal and I slept thru the majority of it.
When cruising anywhere but specifically Alaska - I recommend a balcony. One it can help with the motion sickness to see the horizon and get the fresh air but mostly the views are spectacular. And when going to glacier bay there are plenty of places on the ship to view the glaciers and see them "calving" into the water. I do recommend being outside for this experience so that you can hear the calving. Its loud and magnificent to experience. The wild life you will see while on an Alaska cruise is plentiful. Seals, whales, and more. Having a balcony room allows you to watch it all while in your pajamas sipping on a morning coffee. Or perhaps at sunset with a glass of wine.
Aside from the beautiful views, the food on the cruise is great and the options at any time of day is nice to have. Desserts at midnight? Sure! Want a morning pizza? Of course! Now, every ship is different but this was my experience with HAL and being the food junky that I am - it made my day! My kids still rave about the Dive In restaurant and their chicken sandwiches.
Lastly, where can you see about 4-5 different cities with different excursions at each port and leave your clothes in one spot. That reason alone is why to try cruising for your next vacation!
